Measured Steps: Tips for a Successful Cloud Migration
It is pretty easy to get caught up in the hype around moving to cloud - and if you don't get caught up in it, it's likely that your senior management will. With all of the articles and blog posts out there, it would seem that everyone is feverishly moving their entire infrastructure into the cloud as quickly as possible.
Of course, you know that it takes time to migrate IT infrastructure and application, regardless of the destination. And while cloud services do offer a lot of advantages, you know that moving everything to the cloud, all at once, is much easier said than done. And while it might prove to be worth it in the long run, migrating your servers and applications with no downtime can be a risky proposition.
Tips for a Smooth Cloud Transition
Moving to the cloud shouldn't be an 'all-or-nothing' proposition. After all, your IT environment isn't a single monolithic application - you provide applications from a number of different devices, applications and data sets. So why should you treat the migration as a single activity, with just one destination? Here are some ways to think about migrating to the cloud in a way that makes a little more sense:
- Different applications = different cloud platforms - There's no reason why everything has to go to one cloud provider, or one cloud platform. Some applications work better in a SAAS model, and some are better with an IAAS approach.
- Focus on 'low hanging fruit' - Don't start with mission-critical applications. Cloud technologies can be used for everything from email services to data backup and storage, which can be easier to implement in the cloud.
- Don't lock yourself in - There's nothing that says you have to utilize just one cloud provider.

At NCA, we specialize in working with clients to create migration strategies that work for them, based on their particular environment and requirements, not a 'one-size-fits-all' approach.
